MARKETING TIPS FOR PLUMBERS

The #1 Mistake Plumbers Make With Online Advertising

July 24, 20269 min read

If I had a dollar for every time a plumbing contractor sat across from me in a consultation, threw their hands in the air, and declared, "Tyler, we tried Google ads... we tried Facebook ads... ads just don't work in our market!"—well, I’d probably be retired on a beach somewhere sipping drinks out of a coconut.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tyler Williams, owner of Mammoth Marketing. We specialize in helping plumbing companies scale up, get found online, and turn lookers into booked service calls.

Now, whenever a plumber tells me that advertising doesn't work, I get curious. Because 99% of the time, advertising does work; the problem is that there is a massive leak in the bucket somewhere between the moment a homeowner clicks an ad and the moment they actually try to hire you.

Just a little bit ago, I was hopping off a client consultation, saw this exact issue happen again, and realized I had to drop everything, hop in front of the camera, and write this out for you. If you’re currently paying for digital ads or thinking about launching a campaign soon, stick with me. I’m about to show you the single biggest, most infuriating error plumbing business owners make in their advertising—and exactly how you can fix it today to start printing booked jobs.

Spying on Plumbing Ads (And What I Kept Finding)

To understand where your marketing money is going, you have to look at the tools of the trade. Google has a handy little tool called the Google Transparency Center, and Facebook has the Meta Ad Library. These platforms allow me to peek behind the curtain, look at the ads your competitors (and maybe you) are running, and click directly through to where those ads are sending potential customers.

The other day, I was auditing a campaign where a plumbing business was running an ad for a drain cleaning special.

First off, running an ad dedicated to drain cleaning is a solid idea! Drains clog every single day. The offer in this specific ad was "$75 off drain cleaning." To be totally honest with you, that’s a little bit of a "weak sauce" discount. I think if you're trying to stop someone mid-scroll, you can come up with something a little more compelling than that. But hey—I love that they were running ads, testing offers, and taking action. That's half the battle in marketing.

However, when I clicked on that shiny, promising ad... disaster struck.

They made a critical, stomach-churning error that ruined the entire campaign. And to make matters worse, they didn't even realize how poorly the campaign was performing because they weren't using proper conversion tracking (which is a whole separate topic for another day).

So, what was this tragic, money-wasting mistake?

The Two Biggest Destination Traps

When I clicked on that drain cleaning ad, guess where it took me?

It took me straight to the homepage of their website.

Now, sending paid traffic to your homepage sounds totally fine on the surface, right? You spent thousands of dollars building a pretty website, so why wouldn't you show it off?

Because it’s a conversion nightmare! Let’s walk through the human psychology of what actually happens when a customer sees your ad.

The Homepage Nightmare (The "Front Door" Trap)

Imagine a prospective client—let's call him Dave—is scrolling through Facebook on a Tuesday evening. Dave thinks to himself, "Man, that bathroom sink has been draining pretty slow lately." Suddenly, he sees your ad offering a discount on drain cleaning.

Dave gets excited. He thinks:

"Heck yeah! I'll save 75 bucks, get the sink fixed, and use those savings to take the family out for a nice steak dinner. Well, actually, I'll order a steak for myself and let them watch me eat it because I earned it."

Dave clicks the ad, fully expecting to claim his deal. But instead of seeing the drain cleaning discount, he lands on your generic homepage.

Now Dave is forced to play detective. He’s staring at pictures of your team, reading a block of text about your company history since 1984, looking at a list of 15 different services (from tankless water heaters to commercial repiping), and trying to figure out where that stinking offer went!

What does Dave do? He gets confused, gives up, closes the tab, and goes back to watching cat videos on Facebook. You just paid $10 for that click, and Dave’s drain is still clogged.

The Contact Page Trap (Equally Terrible)

When I explain the homepage trap to plumbers, their immediate reaction is often: "Okay, Tyler, got it. Homepage bad. So we’ll just send ad traffic directly to our Contact Page so they can reach out!"

Please, I beg of you, wipe that idea from your brain immediately.

Sending ad traffic to a generic contact page is almost as bad—if not worse—than sending it to the homepage. Most contact pages consist of a blank online form, your phone number, and a map of your shop.

What's missing?

  • Zero social proof or customer reviews.

  • No promises or guarantees.

  • No mention of the specific offer they clicked on.

  • Nothing to persuade them that you are the right plumber to call over the guy down the street offering the exact same thing.

The Solution: Dedicated, Conversion-Optimized Service Pages

If you want your ad dollars to actually return a profit, you have to stop dropping leads off at the front door and start leading them directly to what they asked for.

Instead of your homepage or contact form, you must send ad traffic to a dedicated Drain Cleaning Landing Page (or a dedicated service page on your site that has been specifically tuned for conversion optimization).

[ Facebook / Google Ad ] │ ▼
[ Dedicated Service Landing Page ] ──► [ Clear Offer & "Call for Details" ] ──► [ Booked Service Call ]

When Dave clicks your drain cleaning ad, he should land on a page that screams DRAIN CLEANING in big bold letters, featuring the exact offer he clicked on right front and center.

Spicing Up the Call to Action: "Call for Details"

We need to give users clear, step-by-step instructions. You have to lead the horse to water (or in this case, lead the homeowner to the pipe).

Instead of forcing someone to fill out a long, boring form—which lets the lead cool off while they wait for an email back—you want to push for immediate phone calls.

Here is a simple, high-converting tactic we use:

On your landing page, place a bright, clear button that says: "Call for Details."

Add a cute little icon next to it—maybe an old-school telephone (even though modern smartphones look like glass bricks now, everyone still recognizes the classic phone icon).

Why does "Call for Details" work so well?

  1. It creates curiosity.

  2. It eliminates the friction of filling out form fields on a small mobile screen.

  3. It gets a live human being on the phone immediately while their intent and interest are at an all-time high.

CSR Mastery: Turning Phone Calls into Money

Once you get the homeowner to click "Call for Details" and call your shop, the marketing machine has done its job. Now, the baton is passed to your Customer Service Representatives (CSRs).

If a potential client calls and asks, "Hi, I saw your drain cleaning offer online and was wondering what the details are?" your CSR needs to be trained on how to handle that call smoothly to build rapport and close the job.

Here is a simple framework for how your team can turn those calls into scheduled appointments:

CSR StepAction StrategyWhat to Say / Do1. Validate & Create UrgencyConfirm the offer and mention limited availability."Yes, absolutely! We actually only release a few of these promotional slots per week, but I happen to have an opening open today at 2 PM or tomorrow morning."2. Book the Initial JobLock in the appointment time while they are engaged."Let's get you on the schedule right now so you don't lose that $75 discount."3. Position the Upsell/InspectionOffer additional value while the technician is on-site."While our tech is out there clearing that drain, we'll also do a quick complimentary scope of your main line just to make sure there aren't any hidden issues."

By training your CSRs to handle these calls, you don't just book a $75 drain clearing; you build a long-term customer relationship and create a hit-list of potential future repair work that your company can capitalize on down the road.

Remember: If your ad campaign breaks down at the top of the funnel, you get zero leads at the bottom. And then you'll end your year sitting with your accountant, wondering why you spent tens of thousands of dollars on advertising with nothing to show for it!

The Bonus Loop: The "Mattress Method" of Retargeting

If you want to get really crazy and maximize your marketing ROI, you need to build what I call marketing loops.

Let's say Dave lands on your high-converting drain cleaning page. He sees the offer, he’s interested, but right as he’s about to hit "Call for Details," his dog starts barking, or his kid spills milk on the rug. He gets distracted and closes his browser.

Does that mean Dave doesn't need his drain cleaned anymore? Course not! Drains are annoying, but unless it's a massive emergency backup, people can live with a slow drain for a couple of weeks before taking action.

This is where retargeting comes in.

Have you ever searched for a new mattress online, and then suddenly, for the next 30 days, everywhere you go on the internet—Facebook, news sites, weather apps—there’s an ad for that exact mattress following you around like a lost puppy?

That is retargeting.

By placing a simple tracking code on your service landing page, you can follow that prospect around the web with follow-up ads for the next 30 days, gently reminding them: "Hey Dave, still dealing with that slow drain? Call us today to claim your discount!"

When you combine a targeted ad, a dedicated landing page, a "Call for Details" button, trained CSRs, and a retargeting loop, you stop wasting money and start running a real, fine-tuned marketing engine.
